Wow How Time Flies…

January 7, 2012

One of the kids is blogging now so I decided to check out my blog.  I was so surprised to find that I hadn’t made a post in almost a year.  I thought it was maybe 6 months at the most.  This just tells me that I need to slow down and start to cherish my time.

My vow for the year 2012 is to start blogging…often.  I love to write and I think I am pretty damn good at it.

So here is my promise….I will blog at least once a week…I will take you inside of Smiley’s and let you get to know and I mean really get to know about the people that work there.  I truly feel that Smiley’s needs to continue to stay a community store.  I know we don’t have bright lights, new coolers, beautiful shiny floors but we are what we are and we love what we do!

I also have a plan to start a video series to be posted on youtube.  I know the subjects that I want to cover.  I want to have fun and I promise that you will enjoy each one of them….you can also suggest things that you would like to see me do….

So for now I am going to end this post but I promise to be back in the next few weeks…maybe it will be your winter enjoyment :)

Cheers

Day 4

Woke up today and found that I had ran out of the filters.  I thought they were 2 packs of cigarettes but they are only one.  Damn!  I was good though and only smoked a couple of “real” cigarettes until I went to work.  Once I got to work I didn’t have anymore “real” cigarettes.  So for the day I have only had 5 “real” ones…I know, I am a loser :( .  I am not really feeling too bad about it because I was close to a 2 pack a day smoker!  Now I am smoking less than a 1/2 of pack so that is good.

Talked to a man today that is on that prescription drug that helps you to not smoke.  He was buying 5 packs of cigarettes.  He said it wasn’t working.  I sold him one of the kits.  I hope it works.

Someone said to me today that I wasn’t really quitting smoking.  I said what is the difference between one of these and patches?  Patches is putting nicotine into your system, just like this is.  Maybe the patches are a bit more controlled but the way I am thinking is that you have to break the “habit” of smoking before you break the habit of the drug itself.  Am I wrong with this thinking?  With the patches I always wanted to pick up the cigarette and that was in the end my downfall.

My plan is this, start breaking the habit.  I went up to a medium filter today thinking that I won’t have to use it as much.  Next week I will go to the light filter for a couple of weeks.  Meanwhile I will also break the habit.  I will use a straw to begin that process.  Finally I will go to the lightest filter available.  If this all works, I will be a non-smoker by my birthday which by the way is May 21st.  From the things I have read online I may not have to worry about not smoking by that day because that’s the day the World will end…….

Quitting Smoking

March 17, 2011

Well it appears that since I know nothing about how to run a blog, I have lost all of my post about quitting smoking. Ugg..and I was doing so well…..

Tomorrow I will begin by posting Day 4 (not that anyone is interested) of my journey of stopping a horrible habit!  So far so good…

Smiley’s is a Discount Beverage, Pizza, Subs, etc store located in Dover NH.  Some people call us Dover’s “Icon” however I think the political figures in this City would disagree.

I have owned Smiley’s since 1987.  For the most part I have enjoyed all of my years in business.  I enjoyed most of the 1000’s of employees that I have had, I enjoy 99% of our customers and I enjoy my current sales people.  Notice I said “current”.  What I don’t enjoy is the never ending paperwork that is involved in owning a business.  If it isn’t the Federal paperwork, it’s the State paperwork.  They get pissed at me because I am so behind but let me tell you, they are so screwed up that one part of their departments don’t know what the other part is doing but that is a whole other post.

At Smiley’s we pride ourselves on customer service.  We know most of our customers by their names and if we don’t know their name we know what they order.  Sometimes it takes time in line because the cashier is taking the time with a customer.  Don’t worry, come here often enough and we will take the time with you too.  Life is too short to be in a hurry or not make a friend everyday.

We carry every brand of brew available in New Hampshire.  We understand that in Maine and Mass you can obtain so many more brews but that’s because of the way our State handles approving brews to sell.  Once again, that’s another post.  You will find that our beer is the “freshest” available.  We rotate our stock twice a week and we do inventory twice a week.  There is no reason for us to carry 30 cases of something when we sell 10 a week.  That creates a rotation nightmare!  We try to order all of the deals available so you the customer gets the lowest price available.  Sometimes this isn’t always the best way to order something.  If there is a case deal of 20 cases to save $3 and we only sell 2-3 a week we will not order the deal.  We feel that as a beer drinker you want the freshest, most cared for product available and will be willing to pay a couple more dollars for it.  All of our beer is kept in their original packages so the light does not get to the bottles.  Much of our beer is kept in a cool, dimly lit room until it is placed on display for purchase.  We will also special order any brew you want as long as it’s available in New Hampshire.  It only takes a week for the brew to come in, sometimes we can have it the next day!  If you have never visited Smiley’s stop by, take a look around and see why so many people purchase their brew from us.  Caring does make a huge difference in the selling of beer!

We also have a full service resturant.  We serve Pizza, Subs, Dinners, Homemade meals, Fried Foods and so much more.  When we purchased the deli we wanted to bring something other than fast food into the City of Dover.  We may not have the nicest sitting area, or the most beautiful wall art but what we do have is Good wholesome food.  If you purchased a sandwich here 15 years ago you will get the same bread, the same meat and the same cheese now that you did then.  We do not beleive in purchasing the “cheapest” meat and cheese available for the week or month.  We stick to what has been proven a success not matter how much it cost.  I will say that not many resturants can say that.  There is so much about the Deli that needs to be said.  We feel that because of the appearance of the building people think that it’s “roadside” food or fast food.  This could not be further from the truth…Please read the information about the deli and we think you will be really surprised!

That’s pretty much it.  Smiley’s has been around for years.  We have seen, heard and been involved in just about everything and anything you can think of.  As I build this site all of that information will be here..it will make you laugh, make you cry but most of all it will help you to understand why Smiley’s is the “Place to Be”.
